It stands within walled earthworks, and remains of an earlier motte and bailey castle are also visible. Within, the columns are decorated with sculptures of medieval musicians, and other fine Romanesque carvings survive. On the walls hang over 200 unique presentation horseshoes forfeited by royalty and peers of the realm to the Lord of the Manor of Oakham.
